British 1845 pattern cutlass by Parker, Field & Sons, 233 High Holborn. Sharp blade 725mm (28,5 inch) long and 36mm wide at base. Unmarked except for the maker's mark "FIELD 233 HOLBORN" on the back. Blade has substantial patina and pitting. Grip and hilt have been painted black over old corrosion.
From 1839 this maker carried among others the title "Armourer to the Police. The fact that there are no military proof marks on this weapon makes it likely to have been police equipment.
